R. Wardell Loveland Member Ward Loveland is a member of the firm whose practice focuses on the defense of insurers in lawsuits and administrative proceedings as well as the defense of manufacturers and distributors in products liability actions. A substantial portion of Mr. Loveland’s practice is also dedicated to advising and training insurers with respect to claims handling practices and compliance with Department of Insurance regulations, including the Fair Claims Settlement Practices Regulations. The advice that Mr. Loveland provides to insurers incorporates a variety of topics, including good faith claims handling practices, compliance with new legislation and regulations, maintenance of claims and underwriting files, computer-based valuation programs, auto body shop labor rates, general business practices and privacy issues. Mr. Loveland also reviews and edits claims manuals and guides in order to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and regulations. Mr. Loveland has received, and provides, specific training in special investigations involving potential fraud. In addition to defending lawsuits involving such claims, in particular insurance bad faith lawsuits, Mr. Loveland has advised and presented seminars to insurers with respect to strategies to detect and defeat insurance fraud. Mr. Loveland has also been an invited speaker before the Northern California Fraud Investigators Association, Western States Automobile Theft Investigators, Arizona Automobile Theft Investigators Association, the National Business Institute, and this year he was welcomed by the California District Attorneys Association to present a series of speeches on cooperation between law enforcement and the insurance industry in the investigation and prosecution of fraud claims. In the area of litigation, Mr. Loveland handles matters that include the defense of insurers in class action lawsuits, complex insurance bad faith and coverage cases, and matters involving allegations of fraud. Mr. Loveland also represents manufacturers and distributors of products in strict product liability actions and general business disputes involving the sale and warranty of goods. Mr. Loveland received his A.B. degree from Princeton University in 1981. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School in 1986. He is a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar Association, the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada, the Northern California Fraud Investigators Association, and the Defense Research Institute.
