Randy has spent his entire legal career at the firm as a trial lawyer and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Randy handles a wide variety of complex tort, commercial and insurance litigation and he has tried numerous cases to jury verdict in both state and federal courts. His practice focuses on aviation, insurance coverage, insurance bad faith, product liability, catastrophic injury and wrongful death, and business litigation. He routinely handles multi-million dollar claims throughout all phases of litigation, including trial and appeal. As an adjunct to his litigation practice, Randy advises and trains insurers and their attorneys on coverage and insurance claims handling issues.
In his aviation practice, Randy has represented airframe, engine and component part manufacturers, airlines, pilots, aircraft owners, repair stations, ground service providers, airports and security companies in breach of contract, negligence and products liability actions. His cases have included crashes of hot air balloons, helicopters, gliders, military aircraft, small single engine airplanes, and large jet aircraft. A number of these cases have been tried to jury verdict. He has also lectured at various aviation industry seminars and written articles on aviation-related issues.
Randy has over 35 years of experience advising insurers throughout the United States on a wide variety of coverage-related issues and claims arising under a wide array of policies of insurance, including automobile, homeowners, aviation, products liability, commercial general liability and professional liability. He has litigated complex insurance coverage cases and has both prosecuted and defended declaratory relief actions. He has written several articles on insurance coverage issues and has spoken at many insurance and defense attorney sponsored seminars and events. For the past several years, Randy has been recognized as a California Super Lawyer, an honor bestowed on the top five percent of California attorneys.
In addition to insurance coverage matters, Randy has defended insurance bad faith claims since he started at the firm in 1978. He has represented a number of different insurers in a wide variety of first and third party actions involving claims for bad faith and for punitive damages. He has tried to jury verdict many insurance bad faith cases and has handled appeals arising out of bad faith actions.
Regularly lecturing to members of the bar and the insurance industry on the subject of insurance bad faith law in California, Randy has also been a panelist at many bad faith seminars and programs sponsored by the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada. He also routinely presents seminars to insurance company employees on how claims personnel and in-house lawyers can avoid bad faith claims.
Randy also represents clients in commercial and business disputes, often when those are litigated. These diverse matters involve a variety of issues, including breach of contract, wrongful discharge, civil rights violations and religious discrimination. For six years, Randy served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada. He also served for four years on the complex civil litigation committee of the San Mateo County Superior Court which designed and implemented the court’s complex civil litigation program.
